Queen Victoria School dux 2018, Joji Lutumailagi Lesi, has acknowledged his parents’ prayers for his academic success to date. The former deputy headboy of Suva Grammar said “God is good”. His father and school principal, Qalo Lesi, said he was not surprised about Joji’s academic achievement.

God is good, says the dux of Queen Victoria School.

Joji Lutumailagi Lesi thanked his parents for their prayers and unwavering support that encouraged him to work hard throughout the year.

“God will not reward someone who is lazy and that kept me going,” said the 19-yearold who shared what his father told him.

His father, Qalo Lesi, is the principal of the school in Matavatucou, Tailevu. The Year 13 student was the deputy head boy of Suva Grammar School last year. “Being a new student was not easy, especially trying to adapt to the environment and the system,” Joji said. “Sometimes we don’t get the privileges like the old students, but I thank the Lord Almighty for providing me with the strength to go through this year.”

Joji wants to study medicine.

“So I am leaving it in God’s hand and let Him do His work.” Mr Lesi said he was not surprised of his son’s achievements.

“He’s been working really hard this year. He’s always with his books and I have never seen him wandering around. Most of the time he just locks himself in his room.” Mr Lesi added that his son missed out on the cut-off mark for Medical School so he decided to repeat this year to achieve the cut-off mark even after he received offers from the Universities.

“He was qualified to do law but he turned it down because of his aim to become a doctor.

“Because of his experience from last year, this year he worked really hard and I appreciate it.”

Commenting on the academic level of the school, Mr Lesi said the school has excelled academically and this year they have climbed another level.

“We are doing our very best,” he said. “We will keep on and we are pushing our students to excel.”
