UN support for women rugby
More international support has come in for women rugby during the Oceania 7s tournament to be held on November 9-10 at the ANZ Stadium, Suva. This was after a joint announcement yesterday by Oceania Rugby and United Nations Women at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
Speaking during the press conference Oceania Rugby women’s director Cathy Wong said they welcome the support from UN Women.
“For the woman’s rugby championship we are very proud to be working together with the UN Women as a global champion for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls to an equal playing field,” she said. “Promoting an equal playing field for boys and girls is a key strategy to addressing gender equality and violence against women of all levels of the society, community on to the global stage. This will also be a historic year that Nauru will be entering its first national women’s team.”
UN Women’s Ending Violence against Women and Girls programme specialist Abigail Erikson said the partnership is to empower women in the Pacific through sports.
“UN Women is proud to partner with Oceania Rugby in promoting gender equality and in the longer term to prevent violence against women and girls.
“Together with Oceania Rugby we are building a collaboration and partnership which started last year.”
