Plantation, Recovery Top Hotel Volleyball Comp
The Panapasa Sailasa captained- Plantation Island Resort team took out the men’s title at the 29th Fiji Hotel Workers Volleyball tournament at Ratu Navula College ground, Nadi yesterday.
The side laced with Viliame Lockwood, Joseva Tuberi and Josaia Cama proved to be a tough combination as they pipped Team Port Denarau 23-22 in the final.
“This is a historic for the team as we cannot believe that we won the competition but I guess it is because of team work and the dedication of the players,” Sailasa said.
In the semi-finals, Port Denarau beat Radisson Blu 29-20, and Plantation Island beat Laucala Island 24-23.
Suva based- Recovery took out the women’s title with a 29-20 win over Jean Cousteau Island Resort.
They were led by Varanisese Bula and SportsWoman of the Tournament Ecelina Lalabalavu. “We won the tournament on debut. We don’t have any national rep but we were humbled and used this grand opportunity to showcase our talents.
“It is a good interaction as we don’t have this before,” Bula said.
In the semi-finals, Jean Cousteau beat Malolo 17-15 while Recovery beat Vomo Island 20-16,
MIXED EVENTS
Koto Laveti who took out the Sportsman of the Tournament award led his Naviti Resort team to win the mixed volleyball final.
In the semi-final, Naviti beat Sheraton Tokoriki 29-14, and InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort beat Namale Island Resort 18-15.
In the mixed netball, Tavutu Ratu led the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort to retain the title back to back with a 11-9 win over Hilton Fiji Resort. Association president Jack Stack said the tournament is all about forging new friendships, cementing current one and reconnecting with old friends.
He thanked Nadi International Airport Volleyball committee president Joe Gray and Jerry Cakau for their contribution to the event.
