The choice to take Fiji forward is yours

As the 2018 General Election date draws closer, the battle is already heating up.

Political statements and debates in pocket meetings and rallies, on national television and on radio have certainly opened up one’s eyes as to who is:

• Lying and who is talking trash

• talking economics when the person does not know about economics • pushing through their manifesto issues in the right direction • getting irritated when pushed into a corner • oblivious to everything else except just what the person had just read in his or her manifesto These are some of the candidates, who are standing in this election and this is not the first time.

Some of the recent debates on television have been hilarious and rallies and meetings certainly earned some stomach cramps from excessive laughter.

In reality, some of the candidates standing for this election are either in it for merely a chance to sit in Parliament and become a MP or even better to get a cozy salary virtually doing nothing because you don’t know two hoots about the running of a government or are there so that some of the parties have their numbers beefed up. Such is the character of some of Fiji’s political parties. At the end of the day you sit and wonder if these people get to run the country, where will Fiji be before the next election.

Sweet talking candidates are just as bad as those who promise you straight up what they will do.

During the rule of the Alliance In the 1970s, there was one politician who went around at meetings telling voters – “look at my face properly. You will get fed up of seeing my face every time there is a knock on your door once you vote me into parliament”.

Then there was the other who told a group at a meeting after being asked if their road could be tarsealed – “Elect me into parliament and I will make sure that I will tile your road and not only tarseal it”.

Such are the jokers in the array of candidates, but the sad thing is these very people like to believe in their own lies.

For voters, you must be able to differentiate between such candidates and a person you know will better your lives and that of your families.

Look for a candidate or party whom you know has given you or will or continue to give you a steady footing for you and your family.

Look for a party that has your family’s future secure in the long term and not just for now.

Do not be swayed by promises of what a party would do if they cannot give you the economics of how they would achieve this.

Remember at the end of the day, it is your tick in that box which will not only decide on your future but the generations of your family to come.

Do you want a bunch of jokers running your country or a Government that takes everyone forward? That important choice is yours.
