Digicel Diwali treat for blind students
Students of the Fiji School for the Blind were provided with a festive Diwali lunch thanks to members of Digicel Fiji. The visually impaired children were provided with traditional vegetarian food and lots of sweets at their school in Vatuwaqa to celebrate tomorrow’s festival of lights.
Digicel Fiji chief executive officer, Mike Greig said that every Diwali they would find a group in a community to reach out to.
“This year it is the School for the Blind and next year it might be something different,” said Mr Greig.
“It makes sense for us to reach out to groups that perhaps need a bit more attention and there are plenty of them around.” Mr Greig said it was their endeavour to reach out to communities they could help.
“We take corporate responsibility pretty seriously and this is not something we are trying to advertise, it's just part of giving back to society.
“It’s not a lot and it doesn’t take a lot of effort, but it means so much for the children.”
Fiji School for the Blind headteacher, Sharmila Chandra said the school was grateful for this Diwali gesture. “We are very much privileged with the thing that people keep these children in their thoughts,” Ms Chandra said. “Some of the students do not have families to look after them so they feel very much part of this festive season,” she said. “We as teachers always welcome visitors and there are 32 visually impaired students in the school.”
One of the students, Naomi Lewakita, also said she was thankful that Digicel Fiji thought of them as they brought food to help ring in Diwali 2018.
