Parents and guardians have been told that they play a very important role in the lives of their children.

The comment has come from Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar while officiating at the Nadi Muslim School Kindergarten graduation yesterday.

She said children at the school came from diverse backgrounds and different socioeconomic brackets, some even having single parents, but all had a dream to see them succeed and become exemplary citizens. Ms Akbar said the students would determine the future of the nation. “Encourage children to learn other languages. Multiculturalism is something we in Fiji should all be proud of. Children come from diverse backgrounds, different backgrounds and different socio-economic brackets,” she said.

“The child you send to school must be well looked at home. Values you teach at home are what children will take to school. Children will reflect the kind of life and teaching you portray,” she said.

“You and spouses should have equal responsibilities in looking after your child.

“Be careful of technology. You should control the use of technology for your children. Don’t let it distract you when your children want to talk to you.”

Ms Akbar pointed out that most responsibilities of parents were being carried out by teachers.

“Many times we put blame on teachers. Children have been given rights so you need to teach them their responsibilities and most of all respect,” she said.

“You don’t expect the teachers to teach those values and faith-based teaching. You as parents are responsible for the values, respect of your children.”

A total 92 students graduated and will join Year 1 for 2019.
