Flood Waters Damage Household Items

Flood waters during the height of heavy rain on Sunday night damaged household furniture, utensils and portions of houses belonging to residents at the Muslim League Estate in Nabua, Suva.
Maya Lata, 59, described severe the flooding which hit the area where she had been staying for 14 years.
She said the water level in her house rose to above her knees. “Around 10pm on Sunday, we experienced heavy rain and strong winds and all of a sudden there was water inside my house,” she said.
“While watching television I decided to go have my dinner, but when I entered the kitchen I was frozen on the spot with what I saw. “I did not know what to do because the water level was more than knee-high.”
Confined to domestic duties after retirement Ms Lata said she remained in the house and managed to move her furniture around. “I called Ayesha Bibi, the community spokesperson and told her that my house was flooded and I needed help,” she said.
Ms Lata said she also needed assistance from the Police, but there was no one to help her. Around 11pm the flood waters had started to recede so she managed to save her furniture.
“I am pleading to the Government if they could provide assistance to me because I am old and I have no one to support me,” she said.
“I just need a roof over my head and I am really suffering when disasters like this strike my house.”
Another resident, 42 year-old Losalini Rokovere also suffered from the aftermath of heavy rain as well. “My family and I have been renting here for over a month now. This is the first time we have experienced this sort of flooding,” Ms Rokovere said.
“The water level was close to my hips on Sunday night. My bed, stove, kitchen appliances and our clothes were submerged underwater.
“We are looking for another house to rent. We paid $100 bond and our rent is $350.”
Ms Rokovere said the bad experience would force her family to look for a suitable house.
