Interesting election

- Sydney, Australia Feedback: jyotip@fijisun.com.fj

It's interesting watching the Fijian General Elections from here in Sydney.

The closeness of the election battle must be exciting and nerve-wrecking for some.

But it's good to see that democracy is alive and well in Fiji.

The Fijians have a second crack after the first election in the new Fiji.

I also note that there are young voters, 18 years old plus, taking part in this election for the first first time.

The opportunity for young people to decide who should govern the country must be exciting too.

It gives them a sense of belonging knowing their rights and freedom are being recognised.

It's also good to see more younger women entering politics.

They give politics a unique flavour and dimension.

Women have a lot to offer in national politics.

They may even give men better tips on how to run the country.

It's a pity that the weather spoiled what could have been a higher turnout. Don't be discouraged Fiji.

No one can control the weather, only God.

See what's happening in the devastating wild fires of Carlifornia, United States.

I would like to commend every Fijian for another election.

And so far it has been trouble-free I hear.

I look forward to Sunday when the final confirmed results will be known. School holidays will be upon us soon. How many parents have plans for their children when they come home and stay home for the duration of the school holidays?

Organise some meaning activities for them so that they don't get bored. The activities don't have to be games only. They can be doing house chores like cleaning up inside and outside of the house.

The key is to keep them busy. After the Flying Fijians' dismal performance against Scotland coach John McKee continues to give preference to his two blue-eyed boys – Ben Volavola and Jale Vatubua.

When Tuicuvu was injured he should have played Veitokani at 10 and move Volavola to 15.

McKee has been purposely ignoring Waisea Nayacalevu, who has been the most consistent tryscorer among Fijians in the French Top 14. Nayacalevu played two weeks ago for Stade Francais, so he is not injured anymore. With the World Cup looming next year we have only 11 months to get an idea of the strong contenders for the 30 odd players who will be selected.

The forwards should be sorted out by now with the emerging of the Fijian Drua players who should be given game time against Uruguay this week. What happens if Volavola is injured? In fact, along with Veitakoni, there should be one more player on the radar or given play time.

Fijian players are dominating the wing position, but we need an exceptional no.10 and a few crack centres who can break through the defence and offload the oval ball to our factory of wingers. We only have Semi Radrada and we need three more players of his calibre. At the moment I only see the Fiji Sun raising questions on Fiji's performance and player selection.

This should be continued by all media so the consistent and deserving players on merit are selected for the World Cup next year. Fiji Rugby has just given McKee a free hand, but without pointing out his mistakes and weakness, which is visible to Flying Fijian supporters. A job well done by the Fiji Elections Office (FEO). By far the most organised, fool proof general elections. Mohammed Saneem, the Supervisor of Elections must be commended. Such are the required high standards.
