Shweta Shivani acknowledged her parents’ sacrifices and support after being awarded the 2018 Dux prize for Nawai Secondary School, midway between Nadi and Sigatoka.

“I am so proud today because it was not only my dream, but it was my parent’s dream to achieve this award,” the 18-year-old said yesterday.

“I had challenges, but my biggest challenge was balancing my time between my studies and the leadership role that was entrusted to me as the head girl of the school.

“It was not easy, but I learned to manage my time wisely. At times we have visitors at home and I felt that I have to attend to them.

“I am thankful to my parents for supporting me and ensuring that I spent quality time with my books,” she said.

Shweta acknowledged the support of teachers and especially the principal of the school for his guidance.

Her plan next year is to pursue studies at the University of the South Pacific majoring in Finance and Accounting.

Proud mother Mohini Lata, 38, was happy with her daughter’s achievement.

“I am satisfied with my daughter’s achievement because all our support and our encouragement for her throughout the years have been paid off today. I am so happy and I am proud of my daughter.”

The family lives at Sariyawa Settlement in Momi, Nadroga, a 20-minute drive from Nadi.
