Maneeza follows sister to be dux
Success is not determined by the number of awards you win, but rather by your ability to rise after life brings you down, says Maneeza Khan, the Dux of Deenbandhu Memorial Primary School. Maneeza was also the Highest Achiever for 2018 and picked up six subject award prizes for her outstanding performance in Mathematics, English, Hindi and the sciences during the school’s prizegiving ceremony held yesterday at the Jai Narayan College Hall in Suva.
Originally from New Delhi, India, her family moved to Fiji last year after her father, Gausal Khan, joined the Fiji National University College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences as a Professor.
The 12-year-old aspires to work for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, when she grows up.
“I want to be a doctor and help children around the world through UNICEF,” she said.
Her sister, Mudiha Khan, was the Dux of Deenbandhu Memorial School last year and following her footsteps was not an easy feat.
Adjusting to a new way of life in a different country had been tough for her, but Ms Khan said that her mum always taught her to overcome challenges and not give up.
“Life will always have its fair share of ups and down, but you have to rise and overcome it,” she said.
