The Year 13 Pure Science student said it was her uncle who brought her to Ballantine Memorial Secondary School, with the aim of a prosperous future.

“I come from a very poor background and my uncle was the one who brought me to this school so that I can study and change my family’s life,” she said. “My uncle is a mathematics teacher in this school and he wants me and my siblings to have a good career in life.

“My guardian who is my uncle inspires me a lot because he supported us financially which I am grateful.”

The 19-year-old said being away from the rest of her family, especially her siblings was her biggest challenge.

“I am raised by my guardians and they are very supportive and they always encourage me and my siblings to study.

“Since we are not financially stable, my guardians always encourage us to work hard to make a difference in future.”

She said that her parents are separated and her father and siblings are in Lautoka. During her studies, she stays in the school cottage. Laite said that she wants to become an aircraft engineer someday because it is unique job.

“I want to be something in life where I can travel and see world,” she said.
