Ijust want my son to come back to me,” wailed grief-stricken mother Sweta Singh, 23, as the search intensified for her son, who went missing during a fishing trip with several family members.

Missing is Swajeet Singh, 3.

The family lives at Naceva farming settlement in the Sigatoka Valley, about 20 kilometres from Sigatoka Town.

Swajeet accompanied his father and other family members on a fishing trip to the Sigatoka River on Sunday afternoon when he went missing. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said, “The victim had accompanied his father and two relatives out fishing when he went missing. A search was conducted, however, it turned out negative.”

A 22-year-old uncle of the victim, Salvin Singh, who also went fishing with the group spoke to the Fiji Sun about the trip.

“It just happened so fast, not even a minute. The boy was sitting on the stone at the river bank while we tried to fix the net that got stuck underneath the water,” he said.

“Not even a minute when we looked back to where he was, he was gone. We called him, but there was no answer. We looked for him all around the area, but couldn’t found him. “We took the net toward where he was sitting while we thought he must have slipped and drowned in that spot, so we could get hold of his body underneath but it was unsuccessful. “We left around 1.30am after searching for him with the help of fire officers and divers, but he was nowhere to be found.

“At 6am this morning we started the search again with the help of Police officers and divers and until now we still searching.”

At the family home, Mrs Singh fainted several times while grieving for her son.

“I just want my child to come back so that I could hold and kiss him once again,” she wailed. “Before he went yesterday with the dad, we were playing and hugging each other and I insisted him not to go with his dad. But he kept on urging to go fishing because he wanted to catch some fish for me.

“I am hoping my son will come back to me alive, but if he is dead I don’t know why God allowed this painful thing to happen to me,” she cried.

Grieving father Jiten Singh, 27, said his son was well liked by everybody.

“He was a happy child and full of life.

“He takes their prayer time seriously and does not want anyone to disturb or called his name when he prays.”
