Four students who were chief guests at the opening of the ANZ Ratu Sukuna Bowl tournament at the netball court at Laucala, Suva, yesterday urged parents to support the theme of the one week meet. One of the chief guests Akuila Niumataiwalu said by adopting the theme “Zero Tolerance on Violence Against Women and Children” they had truly taken a stand that children felt proud of.

“On behalf of the children, I challenge all parents and service personnel to let your actions speak louder than words to support the theme you have chosen for this year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl meet,” he said. Niumataiwalu thanked the parents for teaching, protecting and loving them. Sirilo Turagamaivei defined violence as; V– Vicous, I– Indecent, O – Offensive, L – Loud, E – Expression, N – Noisy, C – Cruel, and E – Ego.

He said children did not accept violence as the answer to the difficulties and problems that they faced daily.

“We believe in dialogue, communication and kindness to break this illness in society,” Turagamaivei said.

He said zero tolerance on violence against women and children meant– nil, none. “No violence at all.”

The Police Force Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) he said, were on the same canoe just as they said at the COP23.

“We are all in the same canoe, so is our collective effort to fight violence.”

He said there was no excuse for abuse on women and children and they needed to be safe from fear and violence. The best way to display change, Turagamaivei says, was to end violence against women and children.

“No violence is justifiable and all violence are preventable.”

The other two guests were Siteri Tino and Sereana Vuivucu.

The men and women’s volleyball and netball competitions have started at the National Netball Centre in Luacala with the finals to be played today.
