The Fijian Residents rugby league team took part in an early morning yoga session yesterday which was conducted by Nadi-based Ashtanga Yoga.

Residents manager Chris Tomlinson said under the watchful eye of the Sleeping Giant in Sabeto, the locally-based side were introduced to basic breathwork and mindfulness training.

“Yoga is becoming an increasingly important aspect of rugby and rugby league training,” Tomlinson said.

“It is a fantastic way of increasing flexibility and mobility. It builds functional strength and also provides a greater understanding and awareness of the body.

“Yoga can assist with recovery and importantly through developing mobility, strength and body awareness it can help to significantly reduce the risk of picking up injuries.”

Tomlinson added that yoga is increasing in popularity with all the rugby codes and it is something he was really keen to introduce during this camp.

“We have a fairly intense itinerary with several games in a short space of time so we are interested in all methods we can adopt that will help us with recovery and injury prevention.

“The boys were really receptive and I’d like to thank Fiona from Ashtanga Yoga for giving up her time to help the squad.”

The Residents face their final test of the Tri- Nations with a game against the British Amateur Rugby League (BARLA) on Friday at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. The match kicks-off at 5.30pm.
