NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg has refused to weigh in on the future of Jarryd Hayne after the former Parramatta star was charged with aggravated sexual assault. Ten hours after Hayne left Ryde police station, where he was questioned by Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives over an alleged incident on grand final night, Greenberg told reporters in Brisbane any questions about the former Parramatta Eels pin-up would be off limits.

“Let me start by saying I know there will be some questions about Jarryd Hayne,” Greenberg said.

“For obvious reasons, given he has been charged and it’s a serious police matter, I’m not going to be making any comment on Jarryd.

“I’m not going to talk about the issues for Jarryd. They are serious issues.

“I’m not going to talk about any impact on the game.

“Jarryd has issues to deal with. They are nothing to do with rugby league at the moment. They are issues for him to deal with in the courts. I’m not prepared to talk about that.”

Greenberg said Parramatta had checked in on Hayne’s welfare.

“I’m not going to add any comments around Jarryd. I know you want me to do. It’s a serious issue,” Greenberg said, before talk turned to the loss of Valentine Holmes who, like Hayne, will pursue his NFL dream. A 26-year-old woman contacted the NRL integrity unit with claims about Hayne before they quickly passed the matter on to police. Hayne no longer has an NRL contract and it appears his chances of securing another deal are unlikely.-
