Mum Sheds Tears As Naomi Takes Dux Prize
Many know her as the blind girl who received a standing ovation when she read the preamble for the 2013 Constitution at the opening of the 2016-2017 Parliament session.
She was even congratulated by the Prime Minister and President.
But not many know that Fiji School for the Blind student Naomi Lewakita was not accepted at birth because of her disability. But she has been a lesson in determination and perseverance.
Yesterday her determination paid off when she was awarded the Dux prize for the school.
Naomi’s mother, Neini Nasalato, shed tears of joy as Naomi scooped the Dux Award and Leadership Award during the school’s prizegiving ceremony at Vatuwaqa, Suva. Naomi, 13, hails from Nayavuira Village in Nakorotubu,Ra, and has maternal links to Naisausau Village in Namara, Tailevu. Ms Nasalato said Naomi was a blessing to her family.
“At first, I did not accept her and rejected her, but as I spent time with her everything changed. She changed my perspective and how I looked at people with disabilities,” she said.
“I am lucky to be her mother and we as her family are blessed that she is part of our family.
“When I take her out people look at her and it hurts me because I was once like that. My daughter has changed how I see things. I am forever grateful to God for choosing me to be Naomi’s mother.
“It was not a shock for me when she was named the Dux for the school because she is a hardworking girl and the kindest person I know. I am blessed that there is a school like this and no one is discriminated for who they are.”
For her part, Naomi dedicated her achievement to her parents and teachers.
“I am so happy that I have been named the Dux of this school. It was always my aim to make my parents proud by getting good marks and working hard. I want to thank my parents for never giving up on me and always being there for me,” Naomi said. “I want to thank my teachers for their never-ending love. I want to thank them for their constant encouragement and for believing in me.”
Naomi also scooped the leadership award, highest marks in subjects such as maths, basic science, social science and healthy living.
Her advice to her peers is to never give up no matter what is thrown their way.
Ms Nasalato said Naomi was a blessing to her family.
