VODAFONE FIJIAN WOMEN FOOTBALL SIDE AIM HIGH

The Vodafone Fiji Women’s football side have qualified for the OFC Women’s Nations Cup semi-finals after they thrashed Tonga 12-0 at the Stade Numa Daly in Noumea, New Caledonia.

The Fijians started strongly as they led 9-0 at halftime and captain Jovitini Tabua is confident they would do well in the competitio­n..

The 22-year-old said that it was a great challenge but also an honour to lead the side for the first time.

“It is a big challenge for me to lead this bunch of girls,” Tabua said.

“I’m so proud to fly my countries flag here in the qualifiers and given captaincy role was something I never expected. “There were so many senior players in the squad and leading the team ahead of them is challengin­g for me.”

The Vanua Levu native also said their first match against Cooks Island was tough But she was grateful for the support from her team-mates and officials.

“I have been given a lot of support from my teammates which make puts off load from shoulders and I am playing my role well,” she added.

“I have a lot responsibi­lity and with the support of everyone it makes me easier to handle all obstacles.

“The first match is always tough and no doubt our opponents gave us tough time but we succeeded because the girls played according to the game plan. We all have scarified for this tournament and we hope keep making everyone back home proud. “Our aim is to create history for women’s football in Fiji and qualify for the first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in France next year. We have a very dedicated and commitment players and I am sure we can upset our toughest opponent and full our dreams to feature in the World Cup.”
