New NFP MP vows to step up conservation activism

- SELITA BOLANAVANUA Edited by Epineri Vula

National Federation Party parliamentarian Lenora Qereqeretabua says she will continue to be an activist for the protection and conservation of our environment and resources. Ms Qereqeretabua secured a seat in Parliament after receiving 1811 votes at the general election. NFP won three seats. “I am very humbled that I have been trusted enough by voters to represent them and what they value in Parliament. I pledge to do my utmost to be worthy of this trust,” she said. Apart from the issues that the NFP believes are the challenges for the country, which are highlighted in the party’s manifesto, Ms Qereqeretabua believes some hard questions need to be asked and some real action taken. On the environment, she said: “We have not been good stewards thus far and that must change. The effects of not being good stewards are already being felt, and most deeply, by the most vulnerable, especially women and children.”

She said the health and tourism sectors, as well as the well-being of those in rural and maritime zones were issues close to her heart.

“I am hopeful that the women in the new parliament of Fiji will be able to show how working together for the good of the people of Fiji is the most important role for us as policy makers. That we can agree to disagree without heckling and being abusive.”

Ms Qereqeretabua aims that at the end of four years to raise support for and trust in the NFP.

She added that there was a lot to learn.

“I would love to hear from those who can help me contribute positively to Fiji,” Ms Qereqeretabua said.

“I don’t have time for personal attacks because they say more about the attacker than about me. I am here to be the positive change I want to see in Fiji.”

She acknowledged her family, especially her parents and her husband, for their blessings and support throughout her political journey.
