The photographic detection device (speed and red light cameras) around the country will go live from Monday, December 10, 2018.

This was the message from Land Transport Authority (LTA) board chairman Vijay Maharaj yesterday.

Mr Maharaj said there were 10 speeding cameras around the country, which were not in operation for the past six months. He said while the cameras were not in operation, the mobile cameras were used to detect speeding and vehicles which run red lights. “From Monday, the 10 cameras will be effective in operation and will enhance the operations of the LTA more efficiently,” he said. “The LTA had to do some regulatory changes, which have come into effect, and had to set up a proper office in which most of our resources and finance were invested. “The initial plan for LTA was to enhance the cameras around the country, but after the changes in the regulations we had to invest more in the resources at the office such as the printers which print the TINs after they are captured in the camera for it to be posted to the people.

“The changes were necessary because the Government had brought about some regulatory changes after people complained they were not receiving the summons or notices within time to pay their fines. After the changes were made, the people were given 90 days to pay their TINs after the date of the issue,” Mr Maharaj said. He said that within the next few months, the LTA would install seven new cameras in the Western Division.

Mr Maharaj said the reason for more cameras to be installed in the Western Division was because of the high rate of motor vehicle accidents and fatalities.

All motorists and members of the public are advised to take heed of this notice and adhere to traffic rules at all times.
