Government has committed $800,000 in the national budget towards the preparation of Team Fiji towards the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.

This was announced by Permanent Secretary of Youth and Sports Maritino Nemani during the Pacific Games lottery tickets launching in Suva yesterday.

“Government has committed $800,000 towards preparation and this compliments the Fiji National Sports Commissions funding to the National Federations.

“This is a true reflection of the commitment of the Government to develop sports in the country,” Nemani said.

“Sport is not just a simple game, it is much more than that. It symbolises a dream to an individual, and to a team.”

Nemani strongly believes sports bring people together as athletes and spectators; it promotes nation building, encourages life-long participation in physical activity and a healthy lifestyle for all.

“Sports play an important role in our country. It provides young people with the right skills, mindsets and values such as honesty, teamwork, fair play, respect, adherence to rules, discipline, perseverance, resilience and a strong sense of purpose. “These community sport networks, when inclusive, are an important source of social networking, helping to combat exclusion and fostering community capacity to work collectively to realize opportunities and address challenges,” he said. Nemani invited members of the public to support Team Fiji.

“I would like to invite our corporate houses to participate and donate for this worthy cause. “Let us all become part of the sporting community and support Team Fiji reaching newer heights.”
