When Deepsha Lal joined Penang Sangam High School (PSHS) she made herself a long list of dreams and goals. This year, she was badged as headgirl – check; and she was named dux later in the year – check. But she saved the best for last – scoring the highest mark attained in the school’s 59-year history for the Commerce stream in the Fiji Year 13 Certificate Examination (FY13CE). Deepsha scored 95 in English, 100 in mathematics, 95 in accounting, 95 in economics and 98 in computer studies; total – 483.

These marks are also believed to be the highest scored in the national Year 13 examination.

School principal Ravi Chand

called Deepsha and told her about the good news, said: “She is very happy, very proud and she is very much associated with Penang Sangam High School. She is the dux of the school and she has proven that she was the right choice.

“With the school’s 60th anniversary coming up next year, celebration towards the event had just begun. Deepsha has already added colour to that celebration.

“This is the all-time record for Penang Sangam High School; no one has passed that result up until now.”

Young Deepsha, who is on holiday in New Zealand with her family, posted on Facebook that scoring the highest mark for the school was the last thing on her list of dreams. On her Facebook page she proudly announced her achievement: “For those who heard my dux speech, I mentioned that I joined Penang Sangam High School (PSHS) with a long list of dreams and goals in my head. Well, scoring the highest in the school in FY13CE was the last one on the list, and I can proudly say that I made my dream come true.

“Before I begin to name everyone, I must say that God is great. This mark came as a surprise to me just like most of you out there. Most people thought I was studying day and night for this but only my friends and I know how very relaxed I’ve been throughout this year.

“A perfect score of 100 was my dream and it wouldn’t have been possible without you, Mr Chand and Sunalini Raj.” Principal Chand further said Deepsha’s recent achievement was a great reflection of the kind of support she received from all those involved.

“It speaks volumes for all the students, teachers, parents and the entire stakeholders like a child scoring that mark it shows that she has been supported equally well by all the stakeholders,” Mr Chand said. “We try our level best to prove them morally and we try and inculcate good values in them giving them fatherly advice and in return the students also give the same respect to us.”

He said Deepsha always showed good moral values towards her family and the school.

“She has been a polite and wellnurtured girl. She was named head girl this year so she took on that responsibility and participating in extracurricular activities. Apart from that she obviously made many sacrifices to gain those marks.” While wishing Deepsha the best in her tertiary education, Mr Chand is optimistic she will continue with her success and make her family even more prouder.
