Improve health standards of employees, Sharma tells seminar
The Government should provide some sort of incentive to subsidise health checkups for its employees. This issue was raised by Parmesh Sharma, the executive director of Oceania Hospitals Limited and general manager of BSP Life at the Win Against Cancer Seminar at Grand Pacific Hotel last night.
“No doubt a healthy workforce is a productive workforce,” Mr Sharma said.
“We should adopt to increase awareness in Fiji in this cancer campaign.”
Mr Sharma said the 2017 statistics of the World Health Organisation (WHO) was concerning.
“For Fiji, ovary cancer is the third highest in the world,” he said.
“Breast cancer is eighth highest in the world, uterine cancer 23rd highest in the world, 28th highest is cervical cancer, 29th highest is liver cancer and 64th highest is leukemia cancer.”
“Being a small nation with a small population our ranking is concerning.
“Interestingly, we are still ranked number one in the world for Diabetes metillus with an average of 193 individual deaths out of 100,000.”
Mr Sharma said they wanted to have an opportunity to talk to the Government on improving the health standards specifically non-communicable disease (NCDs) based.
“We have an average of 1500 cases of different forms of cancer treated or diagnosed since 2012 in Fiji. The numbers are not reducing.”
