RFNS KACAU ON ACTIVE DUTY

CHINA HANDS OVER VESSEL TO RFMF NAVAL DIVISION

- WATI TALEBULA Edited by Epineri Vula

Fiji and China further strengthened navy ties after the handing over of the China-Aid Hydrographic Survey Vessel, RFNS Kacau to Fiji yesterday. Chinese Embassy Charge d’affaires Huang Xuehu said in recent years China-Fiji relations witnessed fruitful achievements in various fields under the two leaders’ instructions.

“Kacau is a result of co-operation between the Fijian and Chinese governments as well as the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Navy and People’s Liberation Army-Navy Colonel Li and his delegation came here especially for the ceremony,” Mr Huang said.

“This is a great moment for teams from both sides.

“The Chinese technical team travelled from afar and they are debugging the vessel. Now the Chinese and the Fijian teams are working together, helping each other to enhance their operational skills. “This will be a great moment for the Fijian Navy.

“The vessel is equipped with hitech equipment for hydro detection. It may carry out hydrographic and maritime surveys, providing detection data and real-time information. As Fijian friends told me,

Kacau will enhance the Fijian Navy’s capability in hydrograph- ic survey and maritime surveillance,” Mr Huang said. Minister for Defence and National Security Inia Seruiratu, who officiated at the event on behalf of the Fijian Government, said Fiji relied heavily on the oceans.

“I wish to thank the Government of the People’s Republic of China for donating this vessel, which is the latest contribution to the Chinese Government has made to help us keep our seas safe, respond to natural disasters, and effectively combat a changing climate,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“The Kacau will boost Fiji Navy surveillance to conduct hydrographic surveys, which means it will provide the best, most reliable data for nautical charts, making our oceans more predictable and easy-to-navigate for thousands of mariners who travel in Fiji’s waters each year.”
