Golden triangle
Floyd Robinson, Suva
In terms of the illegal drug trade, is Fiji becoming the golden triangle of the South Pacific?
Just as much as one may not want to agree, the recent marijuana raids in Kadavu estimated at $2.3 million is a major concern.
What about the unreported cases of marijuana sales and plantations, especially given that some terrain in Kadavu are difficult to access?
Earlier this year, at least 30 bars of cocaine were washed up ashore in Savusavu and Lau. They were valued at around $43million.
Confiscated and discovered drugs may represent the tip of the iceberg. Imagine how much more drugs are being cultivated, processed and traded in comparison to the discovery of $43 million dollars worth of cocaine.
How safe are our children from drugs? One hopes that it has not infiltrated our boarding schools.
All in all we hope that Fiji is not becoming a centre for the drug trade in the South Pacific because there are a number of ports of entry as well as isolated islands which cannot be monitored for financial reasons.
Whatever one’s views, the battle against illegal drugs is a community effort starting at homes and communities. The Police cannot do this alone and, in this regard, we must work together.
