Regular inspection conducted on Inter-Island vessels
The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has undertaken regular inspections of inter-island vessels.
This is to ensure protection of consumer rights for Fijian families who will be travelling this new year festive season.
The commission has undertaken inspection of shipping companies to ensure that they comply with the legal requirements under the FCCC Act 2010) and the Commerce (Control of Prices for Shipping Services, Freight Rates and Passenger) Order 2016.
As part of its monitoring for the festive season, the commission has also visited the Narain Jetty, Nabouwalu Jetty and Savusavu Jetty. The commission understands that the festive season is a relatively busy time as Fijians travel to spend time with families.
In focusing on its monitoring the commission ensured that consumers are not overcharged and that tickets are not oversold. When shipping companies oversell tickets it unnecessarily compromises comfort and safety of the passengers.
Fijians who have issues pertaining to inter-island shipping services are encouraged to contact the FCCC to lodge their complaints.
Further, if consumers feel they have been overcharged on freight rates while transporting goods to and from islands, they are urged to report such matters to the FCCC.
