More than 60,000 speeding tickets were issued between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018, the Fiji Police Force revealed.

Director traffic Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mahesh Mishra said the figures were a serious concern.

A total of 122,081 TINs (traffic infringement notices) were issued last year where speeding still topped the statistics, followed by careless driving.

Despite the number of enforcements, SSP Mishra said lives were still lost on our roads as a result of speeding and drink and drive.

“I thank the officers for working so hard and being vigilant on the road. We also thank the people for supporting us,” SSP Mishra said.

“It is about the driver’s attitude. The Police are working around the clock to ensure the road environment is safe and how best we can have a safe road environment for all road users.

“It is the duty and fundamental responsibility of every individual road user to be responsible and safe whether it is a driver, passenger or pedestrian. They should be concerned about their safety.

“We seek support from all communities as far as road safety is concerned.”

He also highlighted that the public play a critical and pivotal role in terms of assisting the Police Force in creating a safe road environment.

“We are requesting for their cooperation and ensure that we will continue with the momentum of the operations till January 15 and we will also continue with our enforcement strategy in order to how we can enforce the traffic law,” he said. “The amount of infringements being recorded is a huge concern for us. The attitude of the drivers continues to be the same. It’s the person behind the wheels that needs to take the responsibility and the driver should understand that once they obtain the driver’s licence they have conditions and they need to be in the limit of the law,” SSP Mishra said.
