Achurch has answered the prayers of Tamavua villagers by building a $40,000 kindergarten.

The kindergarten, funded by the Jesus City Church of Auckland, New Zealand, was officially opened yesterday at the village, in Suva. Senior church Pastor Jo En Bae officiated at the opening of the kindergarten, which will accommodate 40 children.

It was described as a big day for the village and its children.

Supporting children

Pastor Jo said this was their first project in Fiji and they were thinking of continuing to do this kind of work for children in need.

“We will continue to support this village and I am glad to offer help. It comes from the heart,” she said.

“I was going past the village last year and I heard about the plan from people of the village. Instantly I decided to build a kindergarten.”

Former education officer Vasiti Loki, whose husband is the village chief, said they had to move the kindergarten to the Tamavua Community Hall because of lack of space. “The number of children were increasing and we could not accommodate them in one small classroom,” she said. “The Jesus City Church members heard about our plan and built the classroom in three months. They worked night and day to meet their deadline.”

Mrs Loki said that for the past two months the children were studying at the Tamavua Community Hall.

She said the village supported the Government’s initiative that all students should get early childhood education.

“It was a nice community project for us also. It brought us together and it was a success story for us. Every child deserves early childhood education,” Mrs Loki said. She said they were blessed that Jesus City Church provided the children with uniforms.

“We thank the members of the church for the generous initiative,” Mrs Loki said.
