Deepshikha Out To Fulfil Mum’s Wishes

- SHRATIKA NAIDU LABASA Edited by Epineri Vula

The year 2018 was one of hardship for Deepshikha Priyashna of Waiqele College, Labasa.

Her father, Ramesh Chand, 50, who taught at her school, was suspended for a case of corporal punishment. Then there was the matter of naming the school Dux, which involved Ministry of Education intervention and investigations.

All that was water down the drain when she found this week that she was a recipient of the National Toppers Award given by the Government.

The 19-year-old scored 456 out of 500 in her Year 13 annual examination and also obtained the same mark in the Year 13 national examination.

Her marks are Mathematics 96, English 80, Accounting 93, Economics 91 and Computer Science 96. “After my father, Ramesh Chand, 50, got suspended last year for alleged corporal punishment, school life became very hard,” Deepshikha said.

“Despite all these, my father and I held onto whatever memories of my late mum, Shaleeni Devi,42, (who died of a blood disorder years ago) we had and prayed for justice. “God is so great.

“Why I am saying this is because I saw how my father struggled after he lost his job.

“God blessed me with a Topper scholarship so that my father is not burdened with my education expenses. “It was my mother’s dream to see me become a chartered accountant and this time no matter what may happen I will fulfill her dream,” said the younger of two siblings originally from Kawakawa, Labasa. Deepshikha leaves soon for the University of the South Pacific Laucala campus in Suva.
