- SWASHNA CHAND Feedback: swashna.chand@ fijisun.com.fj

Atragic incident which happened six months ago did not deter the spirit of a newly inducted doctor, Filipe Lesu.

Dr Lesu has been posted to Nasau Health Centre in Rakiraki.

The Health Centre was abandoned after Dr Ashneel Asish Chand was allegedly held at knifepoint and assaulted by two men wanting money and methylated spirits.

More than 2000 people in Nasau and surrounding communities were concerned that they cannot access medical services because the centre is closed.

Dr Lesu said that he is going there against all odds. “I am here only to serve people and people of Nasau need my help. They didn’t have a permanent doctor in the village after that incident.”. Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said that he has been to Nasau personally and had talked to the Tui Nasau and villagers regarding this matter.

“I addressed why no doctor wants to go there and they have promised that they will look after the doctors and nurses,” he said.

“We didn’t have a resident doctor, but we had a doctor who used to go there 2-3 times a week.”

“What has happened is in the past.

“The people of the village need the services and it has been a struggle for them for the past few months,” he said.

“The community has to protect the health professionals and the health professionals need to respect the community and be part of the community,” said Mr Waqainabete.
