STUDENT’S BID FOR WORK
MOVES WORLD BANK REP
The World Bank Office in Suva reached out to a National topper - Lily Sue Cakaunivere, after reading in this newspaper of her desire to one day lead the World Bank.
The story was published by the
Fiji Sun last month.
World Bank South Pacific resident representative Lasse Melgaard said reading about Ms Cakaunivere inspired everyone in their office.
They have also revealed that they may have a plan to work with her in the very near future.
“For us it is a big inspiration when young bright people are aware of the work at World Bank. Our mission is really to focus on our two goals and that is reducing extreme poverty and reducing inequality,” Mr Melgaard said. “One message that I would have in particular for Lily is that the World Bank is made up of people from all over the world.
“It is not unrealistic for a girl from Fiji to think that if she works hard then one day she could be one of the 170 nationalities working in our 130 offices with the goal to eliminate extreme poverty and contribute to equality as well.” Mr Melgaard added that they hope Lily would fulfill her dream of working for the World Bank one day. Miss Cakaunivere is one of the top five nation wide Toppers recipient under the National Toppers Scheme.
She hails from Tubou Village in Lakeba, Lau and has maternal links to Waitovu Village in Levuka, Ovalau.
The oldest of three siblings thanked everyone who contributed to her success. She scored 377 out of 400. She is a former Year 13 student of Jai Narayan College. She was speechless when told that the World Bank was trying to contact her.
“I was not expecting them to try and contact me and I want to thank them for believing in me. I feel very humbled and grateful that they see potential in me,” Miss Cakaunivere said.
