The Fiji Football Association has confirmed that Mikaël Silvestre will be the chief guest for the Vodafone/Fiji FA Awards Night 2018.

This was confirmed yesterday by Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel, who indicated that the awards night will be held on March 2, at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa at Denarau in Nadi.

Patel said this was made possible through FIFA Legend’s programme.

“We are pleased that we have upgraded our awards night as Vodafone has been a good sponsor for us, and we want to make it bigger and better,” Patel said.

“We approached FIFA president Gianni Infantino for FIFA legends to come through and we are pleased to announce Mikael Silvestre as our chief guest for the Vodafone/ Fiji FA Awards night.”

Silvestre is a former French footballer who played as a defender.

He began his career at Rennes in 1996, before moving to Italian club Internazionale in 1998.

He joined Manchester United in 1999, where he won five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in his final season at the club in 2008.

Patel said Silvestre is a well-known personality.

“Silvestre played for Manchester United for almost 10 years before playing for Arsenal and ended his career playing in the Indian Super Premier League in Chennai.

“We are very happy with the legends program at FIFA. It was a total correspondence going back and forth.

“This is the first legend we are bringing and next year we are looking forward to some other legends to come through and we will keep trying our best to bring the legends who have given football in the world.”

He said a programme will be scheduled for the time Silvestre would be in the country. “We have a big programme set-up for him while in Fiji.

“We want to have children mingling with Silvestre and having a session with him at Churchill Park in Lautoka.” Speaking on the awards night, Patel confirmed corporate tables and tickets would be on sale to mark this auspicious event.

“We have got corporate tables available, just finalising with Sofitel and probably it would be $1500 per table of ten which includes a buffet dinner and drinks. Individuals can also buy tickets to come along for a grand night and get photograph/autographs with the chief guest.”

He also had a message to all the districts sending nominations.

“The districts that are sending nominations, what we expect is for everyone to be there. “This is a very important event and first time we have got a guest from FIFA. First time for them to meet the legend and also for them to get rewarded for the career they have sweat out for,” Patel added.
