Varoka Community Post Reopens, Brings Hope, Security to Ba Town
CORPORAL DRARAN: I APPROACHED MY COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND THEY AGREED TO ASSIST IN RENOVATING THE POST
There has been a feeling of reassurance and safety in the business district of Ba Town following the reopening of the Varoka Community Post.
The renovation was a fully-funded initiative by the Varoka Crime Prevention Community. In 1994, a small wooden structure was built, but it was abandoned not long after to make room for Adams Triangle Park.
In the latter part of 2005, while the Minister for Employment Praveen Bala was Ba Town Mayor, the town council along with the support of business houses rebuilt the Varoka Community Police Post. In 2006, due to Occupational and Health and Safety (OHS) issues, the Commissioner of Police then, Andrews Hughes, issued orders to close the post.
On March 12, 2007, after meeting the OHS requirements, the post was reopened by the then Commissioner, Romanu Tikotikoca. The post has encountered many floods and cyclones and needed much repair. Community officer, Corporal Vipen Draran, who took over the responsibility last September, said it was a proud moment for the community as a whole.
“I saw the condition of the post and what needed to be done.
“I approached my committee members and they agreed to assist in renovating the post,” Corporal Draran said.
“They allocated one or two days in a week (depending on their availability) to come together and work on the renovation.”
The cost of materials, which was about $3000, came from the committee and sponsors.
Divisional Manager for Community Policing West, Superintendent of Police, Lepani Liga said: “You have been a beacon of light to Ba Town and you have shown the entire country that the battle against crime is not only the job of Police, but everyone’s responsibility.”
