Priyanka Chopra Brings Life to ‘Isn’t It Romantic’

- Boston Herald

Priyanka Chopra knows that “Isn’t It Romantic” is ideal

date-night viewing. It unfolds as a comical daydream for Rebel Wilson’s comatose Natalie. “Romantic” uses the familiar tropes of classic Hollywood romantic comedies while simultaneously mocking them. Ms Chopra, 36, plays glam Isabella, who is first seen on a giant billboard outside Natalie’s office window.

“My character is the typical hot chick who comes into a rom-com. But at the same time, in this movie I exist only in the rom-com world,” she said.

“I don’t exist in the real-life world of Natalie. I just exist on a billboard. I am a figure of her imagination actually while she’s in a coma.

“And because she thinks Josh (Adam Devine, Natalie’s co-worker crush) is looking at the billboard, she creates ‘Isabella’ out of her head. This really flaky, fun, super-spoiled girl who is like a UN ambassador but isn’t even a real thing.

“It was so much fun for me, especially after ‘Baywatch,’ where I played a really strong woman.”

“Romantic” has two extravagantly staged musical numbers that for Ms Chopra were a flashback to the elaborate Bollywood musical numbers she did years ago in India.

“I was ‘1, 2, 3 — Go!’” she said with a laugh. “That ‘Express Yourself’ number was like something I have done for a dominant part of my life. It really did feel like I was home.” Ms Chopra, Miss World 2000, now ranks as one of planet Earth’s most famous women. She is so high on social media that the IMDb “Isn’t It Romantic” site lists her first in the film’s credits. “Considering that I’m playing a supporting part in this movie, that feels great! Thank you.”

Her romantic life has been continually spotlighted with her December wedding to Nick Jonas, the singer-actor.

Will marriage change anything or everything as she balances film careers in Hollywood and India?

“I think the beauty about Nick and my relationship is that we’re both ambitious and career-driven and we love our jobs and are super grateful for it,” she answered.

“So life has not changed that much. I’ve just found a partner that I can depend upon along the way. I think we both feel that way very much. “Wherever we go in our life, personally and professionally, we just do it together.”
