As part of its corporate social responsibility to the community, Daku Resort organised a three-day fashion and arts festival in Savusavu.

Daku Resort assistant manager and member of the organising committee Talei Osborne said the event which began last night at the resort has two goals.

“Firstly, to showcase Savusavu as a tourist destination and show what Savusavu has to offer in terms of raw talent,” Ms Osborne said.

“Secondly, to support the Lupus Foundation of Fiji (a newly established non-profit charitable organisation) to raise funds and awareness for the auto-immune disease – Lupus.”

“There are four designers – Aisea Konrote (Hefrani), Hupfeld Hoerder (House of Hoerder), Epeli Tuibeqa (Kuiviti), Cherish Prasad (Cherish Designs) and Lorna Grace,” she said.

“Waqa Vuidreketi – a renowned local self-taught artist, born in Suva, Fiji, but has lived between Suva and his village in Lomanikoro, Rewa for almost 35 years is one of the participants.

“He was introduced to various mediums of art, while growing up.

“His philosophy in art is that when you are inspired to create, do your work with confidence.

His works are a journey that travels through self - as an explorer in the complex world of art and life.”

“All participants are local talents, with Cherish Prasad and Lorna Grace being the only ones originally from Savusavu,” she said. “For the first and second day we allowed free entry and for the third day the admission is $75 per person.

“Money raised from the auctions and ticket cost for the final evening of which some of the proceeds will be donated to the Foundation. Ms Osborne said that they were planning to include the event as a permanent part of the Savusavu Tourism Association annual calendar of activities and events. Edited by Susana Tuilau
