Teach Conversational Hindi, Vosa Vakaviti; Akbar says
The Ministry of Education is encouraging schools throughout the country to teach its students conversational Hindi and Vosa Vakaviti.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Rosy Akbar during the commissioning of the Wainibuka District Primary and Wainibuka Secondary School new school building in the past week.
Ms Akbar said Government together was passionate about the practise of multiculturalism in all schools.
“We are encouraging in our
schools and that is the teaching of conversational Hindi and Vosa Vakaviti, I would like to plead with the teachers to take this curriculum very seriously,” she said.
“If we are to bridge language barriers within our community, if we are to build better bonds with other cultures of people living or even studying in your own classrooms here, we’ve got to understand each other’s language.
“We have adapted to English as our medium of communication but that doesn’t mean that we forget our mother tongue, so please follow that curriculum.” Meanwhile, the school building was destroyed Tropical Cyclone Winston in February, 2016. Ms Akbar urged students, teachers, officials and guests not to forget what happened during Tropical Cyclone Winston and should always be prepared for natural disasters.
“We Fijians are very strong, we never give up and we should never give up and that is what we should teach our children.”
The Education Minister was joined by the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Mrs Padmaja.
