Members of a non-competitive social running club in the Western Division have come to the aid of Nadi Hospital with a donation of $132,808.

The money was handed over to the Nadi Hospital board of visitors by the committee of the Bula 21st Interhash last Saturday night.

The handover was made during the 16th Nashash and Hospital Hash 2000th Run hosted at the Hotel Martintar. Chief guest and Fantasy Island owner Abbas Ali congratulated the hard-working committee members of Nadi Hash.

“Nadi Hash, for one thing I know, is one of the largest Hash chapters in Fiji with more than 60 members,” he said.

“It is always in the limelight, especially after organising the biggest single sporting event in Fiji, the 21st Interhash, in May last year.

“That event alone attracted close to 2000 members from all over the world.” The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MITT) and Tourism Fiji sponsored the event with a grant of about $300,000. In return, Fiji – especially the tourism sector – gained more than $6 million in revenue.

“Not only that you all helped promote Fiji as an excellent destination for all forms of tourism. This is truly a remarkable achievement where the ‘club with a drinking problem’ is able to contribute towards this fundraising,” Mr Ali said.

Nadi Hospital Board of Visitors chairman Mohammed Israr Khan thanked the committee for the help and donation.

“I have been with the board for 16 years and this is the biggest amount donated to us from a local organisation,” he said. “We are very thankful for this and it will help us in running hospital services. We would like to thank the committee for the hard work in raising these funds.”
