- LAISA LUI Edited by Percy Kean

Queen and king contestants of the 2019 Vodafone Friendly North Festival planted 26 trees as part of an initiative for a cleaner environment in Labasa, free from pollution.

Organising committee president Ram Lingam said the tree-planting drive was in line with the Government’s reforestation programme. The committee had asked contestants to be part of the national project.

“Today marks the beginning of reforestation, but we would like to take this further,” Mr Lingam said.

“Planting of trees is to help the Government and country become greener and will definitely help each and every human being.

“Planting of trees is an idea related to our theme, Prevent pollution and Save our North.

“One way to fight pollution is to have more trees that will clean the environment for a better place to live in.

The festival committee thanked the Labasa Town Council for space at the Botanical Garden for the planting and the Department of Forests for supplying the seedlings.

The festival of the had started the tree planting initiative in Savusavu last year and it is the first for Labasa this year.

Twenty six seedlings include fruit-bearing trees and native trees brought by the Ministry of Forests under the Reforestation of Degraded Forests (RDF) were planted.
