Safety on roads all our responsibility So let’s support LTA and Police

The battles that the Land Transport Authority fights daily to help keep our roads safe are fought on multiple fronts.

Among the challenges that they face are motorists who show that they simply do not care by the way they behave behind the wheel and how they maintain their vehicles.

And then they have to keep an eye on passenger behaviour. The latest example was a bus being rocked from side to side by students. LTA or Police officers cannot be expected to be everywhere. No one was at the scene to stop the stupidity.

Now the LTA plans to come up with a policy to deal with student behaviour on buses.

It is about time because sooner or later someone will get hurt. But, as we all know, this is not just the LTA or Police responsibility.

It is all our responsibility. The students involved in the latest bus incident come from families and they have parents and guardians.

Parents and guardians are responsible in teaching and instilling discipline in their children. They are legally responsible for those under-18. Even when the children turn 18 the parents and guardians should continue to show their love and support by advising them.

Ultimately, crunch time comes when the children are out there on their own, away from home. The real test is whether they don’t succumb to peer pressure. But studies have shown that children who are well taught at home stand low risks of getting into trouble. It is easy to point a finger at the LTA or the Police when things go wrong but let’s all ensure we do everything we can to help them and prevent trouble.
