SOFTEC Fiji Leads Charge Against Theft Menace
Company helps install CCTV cameras for free at Nadi Market.
Acompany in Nadi Town has stepped up the fight against crime by installing CCTV cameras for free at the Nadi Market.
The project was made possible through the combined efforts of SOFTEC Fiji, Nadi Town Council and the Fiji Police Force with one specific task – to combat illegal dealings at crucial marked areas within the market space.
The information technology officer of the Nadi Town Council, Roneel Raj, hopes the installment of the cameras would help prevent criminal activities at the market. “The minister has been stressing the abuse of drugs that has been circulating in the market. So, we decided to install the cameras so that we can monitor everything that is happening here,” Mr Raj said. “We have heard a lot of complaints from the market vendors, especially those coming from rural areas to sell their produce. When they come in the morning, some of their produce are missing. The
installment of these cameras, I believe, will instill fear on those socalled criminal elements. “SOFTEC has installed this camera for a period of three months, and then from there we will decide if we can install more for the entire market.”
SOFTEC Fiji manager Shakeel Khan said: “It was our own idea, we came up with the project plan to give back to community. During the initial plan, we received a lot of interest from the Nadi Town Council and the Police. We have installed them at crucial locations, as suggestion by the Police.” According to Mr Khan, the Police can monitor these cameras from the Community Police Post within the market premises.
Nadi Market president Lia Lawanimate is pleased that their concerns regarding the theft was answered through the combined efforts of the company and local authorities.
“This project will certainly help solve the theft issue around the market area. And I thank those involved in making it happen,” she said.
