FLYING FIJIANS
FOCUS NOW ON RWC OPENER
The Fiji Airways Flying Fijians have been reminded that playing to the best of their ability will count at the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
This was part of a motivating speech by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama while officially farewelling the team at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa at Denarau, on Tuesday night.
Bainimarama who is also the Fiji Rugby Union president highlighted that he was among the many Fijians who for the past months have been watching the Flying Fijians journey with great pride and optimism. “We’ve watched you build your comradeship in the field, pace and rhythm,” he said. “We admired your discipline and sat on the edge of our seats to watch you go on to win. All we’ve seen is your preparation. But in Japan, it’s going to be another level altogether.”
Bainimarama told the players that they are no longer playing in the Pasifika clash or the Pacific Nations Cup.
“You’re going to compete against best of the best in world rugby.
NO ROOM FOR ERRORS
“There is no easy wins. No room for careless errors or sloppy play.”
The Prime Minister reiterated that there will be glory unless they (players) reach out and take it.
“Pressure will be there from the moment you take the field in your first match against Australia in two weeks’ time.” Bainimarama said the 29-19 win against Tonga was hard fought and well earned. “We all know there were mistakes in the game. You can’t afford those errors against Australia.
“But when you play your best, no matter the size of the country, or the resources behind them, you can defeat them. “That is what victory in the world cup will demand, your absolute best at all times.”
STAY FOCUSED
The Prime Minister reminded the players to stay focused and not to be distracted by the media.
“There’ll be plenty of dramatic headlines and analysis from international media in the lead up to Japan
“Some will place great expectations on your shoulders and others will downgrade your success. Don’t pay attention on them. “You’re going to Japan with one objective and that is to give every ounce of effort in pursuit of the Webb Ellis Cup. We can only achieve that one goal by standing together as a team.”
Bainimarama reiterated to the players that all Fijians are behind them.
“We all believe in you. We expect you to play hard and give your all.”
He urged the players to show good sportsmanship to the highest degree on and off the field.
NEXT CHAPTER
Bainimarama said it was during the same time three years ago, our 7s rugby team to the Olympic Games were being farewelled. They went on to win the country’s first Olympic Games gold medal and now we’re farewelling our rugby team to the World Cup.
“You’re (players) representing the next chapter of another incredible story. As you don that jersey and take the field you’re representing that legacy of sporting excellence. Put your trust on the coaches and prepare yourself for this historic opportunity.” Bainimarama wished the Flying Fijians well at the Rugby World Cup.
“I want to say luck but luck has got nothing to do with your success.
“Success has everything to do with you, your effort, your preparation and your passion for this game.”
