41 People Charged With Serious Non-Sexual Offences
Forty-one people were charged with a total of 50 counts of separate non-sexual criminal incidents in August.
The offences were aggravated robbery (14), aggravated burglary (10), theft (11), assault causing actual bodily harm (1), assault causing grievous bodily harm (1), act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (5), common assault (1), dangerous driving (1), driving whilst under the influence of alcohol (1), obtaining financial advantage by deception (1), receiving a bribe (1), unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs (1), unlawful possession of illicit drugs (1) and resisting arrest (1).
This data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.
This data is confined to incidents of serious crimes other than sexual violence offences which are recorded and published separately.
This data also includes offences committed by Police officers.
Of the 41 accused persons, seven were juveniles and four were Police officers.
The juveniles were charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and theft. One Police officer was charged with obtaining financial advantage by deception whereby he obtained $20 and fuel for his vehicle through deception while another Police officer was charged for receiving a bribe of $50 and $100 from two individuals in order to secure them a place in the Police Force.
Two other Police officers were charged with dangerous driving and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.
There were 33 victims of the 50 counts of separate incidents. Of the 33, there was one incident where the accused and victim were related to one another.
A 28-year-old man was charged with act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for allegedly assaulting his 27-year-old wife. Cash and assorted items ranging from $10 to $74,000 were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and burglary and theft offences which consisted of home invasions, shop break-ins and daylight and night street robberies.
A 36-year-old man was charged with act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to a 43-year-old Police officer. The accused allegedly stabbed the Police officer with a kitchen knife.
A 36-year-old man was charged for allegedly cultivating and possessing 2447 plants of cannabis sativa. Six cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed due to insufficient evidence.
