Nisha and Aksha take top honours in Urdu contest

Maimuna Nisha and Naeemah Aksha scooped top honours during the Urdu Oratory contest at Labasa Muslim College.

Nisha of Seaqaqa Central College was named best orator in the senior category, while Naeemah took out the top award in the junior category.

In the Nazam Competitio­n, Mohammed Junaid of Labasa Muslim College won the top award and in the junior grade Shaina Firdosh of Salove Primary School was named the winner.

“This competitio­n is mostly organised

to bring in awareness of the teaching and learning of Urdu and for students to develop that interest for the Urdu language,” chief organiser Mr Mohammed Harun said.

“These competitio­ns will enable students to be well versed in the Urdu language. We want students to continue to take Urdu language in primary and secondary schools. That’s the main purpose. “We don’t want Urdu language to die out.”

About the contest

The annual Urdu oratory contest and Naat (Nazam) competitio­n attracted 11 primary and five secondary schools from the Northern Division.

Chief guest, managing director of Northern Transport Limited (NTL)Taiyab Hussein, was proud to be the major sponsor. “We hope the event next year will be on a larger scale.”

The contests were organised by the Macuata Muslim League in conjunctio­n with the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts.

Mr Harun said that he is thankful to the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts. Twenty eight students participat­ed in this year’s event.
