Four-Lane Road Open on Nakasi-Nausori Corridor
FOUR-LANE Nakasi-Nausori
Corridor road opens to traffic
The authority is working closely with the Land Transport Authority to install speed cameras and with Police monitoring speed limits.
Motorists travelling along the Nakasi-Nausori corridor will now be happy to know that the new four-lane road near Koronivia has finally been opened for use.
Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said the purpose of opening the roads
to four lanes was for the convenience of traffic users.
“This is not a formal opening; this is an operational opening because we still have not finished the work,” Mr Moore said. “There are still some small amounts of work to be done on the road and it will be completed over the next few weeks,”
Mr Moore said they were finalising the total project accounts that have an estimated cost of $50 million.
“That covers a lot of utility works, a lot of land acquisition and there were delays.
“The junction down at Waidamudamu Settlement was never in the original design, but we decided it was worth doing because there is a large population living at Waidamudamu.
“That meant we had to put in more effort, work and more people and we ended up having to extend the contract slightly.”
He said the new four-lane road would ease traffic flow over the next few weeks because they still had some road works left to be done in other areas around Suva. Motorists and pedestrians have also been urged to take heed of the traffic lights and to follow basic road rules.
The authority is working closely with the Land Transport Authority to install speed cameras and with Police monitoring speed limits. As a result of a delay in works with the initial contractor, the authority took on two contractors to continue road works.
“We have decided not to have any more delays on it so we have turned over the previous contract and deployed two other contractors to do the work and they have done a grand job,” Mr Moore said.
