Workshop Aims To Empower Teachers
Aparliamentary education workshop for teachers was held at the Galaxy Hotel and Apartments by the Parliament of Fiji earlier this month. The workshop aimed to empower teachers with parliamentary knowledge in line with the Ministry of Education syllabus and to develop materials that will be useful for teaching and learning of the topic Parliamentary Rule for Year 10 Social Science students. Bulileka Sanatan College Social Science Head of Department Mohammed Faiaz said the workshop was a timely one.
“I really didn’t know how the Parliament proceedings happened. From the workshop, I have gained the right information and I can pass this to my students in the right manner.
“We did role-plays of the Speaker of the House and Members of the Parliament. This would enable us to build strategies and materials for the students,” Mr Faiaz said. Labasa College Social Science teacher Roneel Avnith Ram said the workshop was a wonderful, informative and effective one in preparing
teachers to deliver the topic of parliamentary rule in much better organised way.
“This workshop has enhanced my knowledge and taken it to the next level whereby now I feel boosted with knowledge to answer questions that may arise in students mind”.
He said it will be helpful to the Year 10 students because it incorporates role plays and work which involves student-centred activities and in the 21st century we need to use these modern tools to teach so that classroom teaching can be exciting.
Twenty-four teachers across Vanua Levu were part of this workshop.
