Housing Authority Terminates Contractor for Waila City

Housing Authority of Fiji has terminated the original contractor for Waila

City.

This was confirmed by the authority’s Manager Technical Services Iliesa Rakaseta.

TOP SYMPHONY (Fiji) Limited of Malaysia was awarded the contract when it was launched in 2011. Mr Rakaseta said right now what the authority was trying to do was to get into some schemes where it could develop the city on its own. “We want it done in-house and in the process we’ve got new people on board, we’ve got two architects and we progressively want to do the construction in phases,” he said.

Mr Rakaseta added that the original contractors had originally wanted to do the whole development on their own for over seven years.

Because of legal reasons he could not comment any further on the termination of contract.

Anticipation

The multi-million dollar development project was expected to yield approximately 5000 housing units that would cater for all categories of home buyers including low, middle and high-income earners.

It was said to be the biggest housing project to be undertaken in Fiji, which was spread over 700 acres of freehold land.

TOP SYMPHONY (Fiji) Limited of Malaysia was awarded the development contract for Waila City, a project initiated by the Housing Authority through the Fijian Government, under a Private Participation Partnership arrangement. Mr Rakaseta said they were focusing on the current developments including the $35m contract in Davuilevu, $20m to $21m contract in Tavakubu, Lautoka, close to $10m contract in Tavua and Nepani that had just been completed.
