KADAVU WOMEN FESTIVAL TARGETS $300K

- MAIKA BOLATIKI

Kadavu women residing in Suva will hold the Kadavu Festival on September 27 at the Furnival Park at Toorak, Suva. Festival committee member Bulou Lavenia Yavala said their target was to raise $300,000.

She said the province of Kadavu had nine districts and 75 villages.

The districts are as follows – Tavuki (11 villages); Ravitaki (7 villages); Sanima (5 villages); Nabukelevu (11 villages); Yawe (6 villages); Naceva (12 villages); Yale (5 villages); Nakasaleka (11 villages); and Ono (7 villages).

Bulou Yavala said the bigger districts would be contributing $40,000 each and the smaller ones would give $20,000 each.

The money collected, she said, would be used to purchase a piece of land in Suva where a Kadavu Hall would be built.

When completed she said the hall would be used for provincial district, village and family meetings, studies for Kadavu students in Suva and could be hired out to people.

Bulou Yavala said in 2015 they also organised a Kadavu Festival and collected $283,000.

The money, she said was used for the provincial council office and the rest was deposited.

She said the some festival committee members sought the support of the chiefs, districts, villages and the provincial council. So far they have received positive receptions.

The festival, she said, was also discussed at the Provincial Council meeting at Tavuki last week.

Bulou Yavala is asking Kadavu supporters in Viti Levu to be at the Furnival Park to help with the fundraising event.
