The Marist Women’s hockey team retain the prestigious Geotech Drilling Marist Eastgate Memorial Hockey tournament title in Suva, yesterday. This was after they beat Ventures 2—0 in the women’s final at the National Hockey Centre in Suva.

Speaking to SUNsports captain Lala Ravatu said retaining the title for the third time all goes back to their preparation. “Winning the biggest hockey tournament back- to-back is exciting, it goes to show the urgency we as a team have in defending this title,” he said.

“When we made it to the final I told them (men and women) this is the chance to defend our title and the ladies responded in style. “The tournament this year was a tough one we knew the teams were going to come hard at us but we were determined and our hard work paid off. “The win is dedicated to all the fallen hockey players and those who are here at the moment, and to our family members as well.” Ravatu said the team had been playing together this year with the aim to develop young players to rise in tournaments as such. “We have been training for this tournament for a few months and the key was to get the young players involved and it has paid off,” he said.

“We started building the team from the local league competition until today.”

SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT

Earlier on Marist thrashed New Zealand- based Hinemoa Kaiapoa 5-0 in the semi-final. Tournament director Paul Frazer said the three-day tournament was a success.

“I want to thank the sponsors Geotech Drilling for making it possible,” he said.

“There have been lots of surprises and of course upsets. “I want to thank the winners for displaying good hockey. I also want to thank all the teams that have participated this year and we are looking forward to a bigger and better tournament next year.” Edited by Leone Cabenatabua
