Though it was a bad week of sport, let’s start afresh, restore CONfiDENCE

It had been a bad week of sports.

Firstly, last Wednesday our Fiji Airways Flying Fijians were beaten by minnows Uruguay 30-27 at the Rugby World Cup pool match.

Then our Fiji Airways Fijian Drua were walloped 4128 by Canberra Vikings in the fifth round of the National Rugby Championship yesterday.

Again on the same afternoon, our Vodafone Fijian Under-23 football team were pipped 1-0 by Vanuatu in Group B of the OFC Olympic Qualifiers at Churchill Park, Lautoka.

Now they have to face a tougher semi-final by taking on favourites New Zealand who had topped Group A. It’s all about learning from where we had gone wrong and how to make it right.

That is how we will be able to change things around this week and come out with flying colours. Fijian U23 football head coach Marika Rodu has shown the right attitude by taking on the challenge. The no-nonsense coach highlighted that it will be a tough challenge but they are going to give it a go. To be backed by the home crowd and playing their cards right, the Fijian U23 can upset the Kiwis. Nothing is impossible.

For the Senirusi Seruvakula-coached Drua side the onus is on them to score bonus point wins in their final two games.

One is on this Saturday at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, where they take on Melbourne Rising and the other is an away match against Queensland Country.

It has been a tough year for Seruvakula since more than half of his squad are first timers at the NRC.

Finally, to our Fiji Airways Flying Fijians who face a mammoth task in taking on Georgia on Thursday. With a slim chance of making it past Pool D, they should take heed of maestro Waisale Serevi’s advice. They should beat Georgia and Wales and forget about the other games.

If it works in their favour in the end then so be it but if not at least they have in some way restored lost pride.
