Truth, love and non-violence are virtues 13-year-old Sushant Kumar will carry with him for the rest of his life.

These and more, are qualities Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life has embedded in people around the world. At the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Primary School in Suva, students and teachers celebrated the 150th birthday anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi yesterday. Dances, poetry and messages were replayed to remember the man many came to know as the “Great Soul.”

Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent protests were utilised in India’s fight for independence from the British Empire.

Chief guest, Ministry of Education’s Jatsika Lal said Gandhi is still remembered for his great work and virtues.

“He was a great freedom fighter and an activist who followed the principles of non-violence all his life,” Ms Lal said.

“Mahatma Gandhi always believed that weapons are not the answer, he believed that they created more problems as opposed to solving them. “He believed these were tools which spread hatred, fear and anger. He always said the best way to win was without shedding blood.” Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent protests were utilised in India’s fight for independence from the British Empire. This succeeded and the British laid down their weapons and left India. Mahatma Gandhi is considered to be the founding father of modern India.

His life’s teaching and principles are used the world over. Former South African president Nelson Mandela also used Gandhi’s principles in his fight to abolish apartheid.
