NZ Fijians To Face Fiji’s Top Snooker Players
The Fiji Billiard and Snooker Association officials are committed to promoting the sport and getting it recognised across the country.
The first event is an annual snooker tournament to be played at the Merchants Club in Suva, tomorrow.
The one-day tournament will feature a Fijian team taking on a New Zealand Fijians side. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Association media liaison officer Keshwan Nadan said, there is a need to host more tournaments to encourage more interest and awareness for the sport.
“Last year we had a Fiji team going over to New Zealand to play and this year we’ve invited the New Zealand based- Fiji team to come over and compete here which we are all excited about,” Nadan said. “So this tournament is organised by the Fiji Billiards and Snooker Association under the BSAF banner. “The New Zealand team is arriving on Friday and the games begin at 10am at the Merchants Club on Saturday. “Unfortunately, we have been organising this tournament on a yearly basis but we feel that we need to host more of this kind of competition on a regular basis to create more interest for the sport and at the same time promote it.
“We are also trying to look at other nearby countries like Australia who are interested to compete in future tournaments.
“It’s also sad that we don’t have those resources in Fiji but we are trying our best to get this sport to a higher level so everybody can enjoy. “Since this sport is a minor one we don’t really have much support from government but at the moment we are going through a tough time trying to get a good sponsor.
“However, discussions are still underway and hopefully we finalise our major sponsor before the actual tournament. “We are going to field players from all around Fiji for this competition and the best ones will be selected this Friday before they compete on Saturday.”
